Chakras – Understanding Your Energy Centers

each of the centers of spiritual power in the human body, usually considered to be seven in number.

Chakra

Chakras are the vibratory energy centers within the body and throughout the universe. The 7 main energy centers or wheels of radiating vibration can be used to awaken and balance emotions, actions, increase self-awareness and restore peace. In Sanskrit chakra means “wheel” as it is believed that the energy spirals and moves throughout the bodies of the human system. Chakras can effect the 7 bodies of the human energy body system. It is believed that each chakra is mapped or assigned to one of the 7 energy systems of the human body and can shift the human 12 auric energy fields.  An aura is a considered an energetic ‘space’ field existing around your body. It can be felt when you see a person and are drawn to them or immediately turn the other way because you can feel their ‘bad’ or ‘negative’ energy. Chakras can be seen as channels that can be tuned up, activated, and balanced  with crystals, essential oils, sound, higher frequency thoughts, mediation, mantras, and more.

Chakra energy can be manipulated to magnetize or repel or draw energy inward or outward. They have a signature of encoded data that are specific to the energy centers of the body such as color, musical tone (note), mantra, planets, physical attributes, emotional characteristics including excessive  and deficient and balanced states, even deities, herbs, Kabbalah and tarot corresponding information.

Ancient Chakra and Yoga Wisdom

Our first people nations (indigenous aboriginals) understood that deeper connection with the stars, elements, earth, animals, the self and others determined wellbeing, fertility and prosperity. From the Twa pygmy the oldest humans on the planet also known as the little people who populated many parts of the planet their magical insight and higher societies such as the Olmec Mayan and Shang Xia dynasties were noted to practice forms of higher spiritual sciences such as yoga which later developed into forms of  martial arts.  It is noted that the ancient pygmy Twa from Africa (ancient Egypt – Khemet) crossed the Bering Strait into the Americas. Other ancient Africans crossed the Atlantic Ocean to enter the Americas at the Gulf of Mexico. Ancient aboriginal negroid phenotypes were the first modern humans on the planet dating back over 24 million years ago and older. These groups migrated out of Africa and became the first Indigenous groups to inhabit the Americas (South, Central, North) and other parts of the world.

Some of our oldest cave inscriptions and stone glyphs depict men in the lotus position in higher states of spiritual union with the elemental and animal kingdoms. The Pashupati Seal discovered in Mohenjo-Daro, dated to c.2300 BCE. This ancient stone sculpture depicts the Hindu deity Shiva as shaman yogi seated in a yogic posture called Mulabandhasana.

The moola denotes “the beginning” the “root” the “base” “origin” “source” where the kundalini (serpent) energy from the root begins to lift upward toward the spine upward throughout the chakras to the crown chakra. Here is where one perfects the Self from the lower nature (chakras 1-3) to the heart (middle) and upward toward self mastery and ‘dominion’ over the lower nature into a god-self and enlightened state or christ consciousness.  This yoga spiritual system was practiced in ancient Egypt  (Kemet “Black land”). The awakened serpent was known as Uadjet (Wadjet/Uatchet) and was paired by the goddess Nekhbet the winged vulture.

Ancient India is known as the home or birthplace to modern day Yoga and its branches. Although archeologist and anthropologist state that Yoga is 5000 years old, we know that the original man is much older than a mere 5000 or 6000 years old. According to Forbidden Archeology: The Hidden History of the Human Race (Cremo, 1993) the modern human bones were found in limestone dated as far as 24 million years ago in the Americas, the Lady of Guadeloupe. found in Guadeloupe, FWI (French West Indies).

The Indus Kush  indigenous Dravidian aboriginals of the pre Vedic civilization practiced ancient yoga predating the arrival of the Indo-European invasion and destruction of their ancient records and the subjugation of a color caste system. Still some statues exists on temples and other archeological artifacts. Harappan Civilization or the Indus Sarasvati (Matriarchal-Goddess) Civilization, flourished from 3300 B.C. to 1800 B.C. Like many ancient civilizations destroyed and forgotten by the coming of the dark ages (Kali Yuga). We can still see their heightened states of spirituality and enlightenment  and we owe our gratitude, reverence and thanks for their contribution to the light of the world leaving behind the sciences of yoga, religions, and spiritual healing systems and modalities.

A Gymnast is Born: Meet Allison Tellez

Over the weekend I had the pleasure of witnessing my niece, Allison Tellez, age 8, compete at The Royals Invitational at Stafford High School.

It was my first-ever live gymnast meet and to be honest, I’m rather hooked. I wish my kids were still young enough to learn and join in the fun. At the age of four Allison and her younger sister were proving to me that they could do every yoga asana I showed them. But this weekend it was Allison who asked me if I could do the Natarajasana, full splits and Padmasana! I was embarassingly sore from that morning’s body sculpting session and did a poor attempt at “Cosmic Dancer” leaving a cracking sound in the air which drew giggles and ridicule. Of course, a flexibility challenge has ensued where all 3 yogi poses will be accomplished by yours truly per our next gymnastics meet. (I better be ready, cause this cutie is brutal! lol)

Congrats to Allison who won 5 medals at the Royals Stafford Invitationals. Unfortunately, she refused to wear her 3rd, 4th and 5th place medals because according to her mother, Faja Tellez, “she’s used to winning 1st and 2nd place medals, this is rare!” I, however, thought she did a fantastic job representing her team, gymnastics school and family! Goo Allison!

Day 12 ♥ Fitness – Yeah It’s Yoga Day! (relax)

So I will be en route this weekend and excited to see my baby girl who’s just been accepted into college this year while a sophomore in high school. YESSS! The red in me comes out…

a-goddess-isFrom the outside looking in one might then think I’m not a very assertive or aggressive person (pause). This is hardly from the whole truth! These past few years certainly haven’t been very career oriented like others before! In fact, I’ve been having more of a ‘New Life’ crisis – a season of letting go (of my old identity). One that includes a huge awakening and shift in reality, goals, values, you name it! It’s been anything but simple,  or easy- but that’s  because I resisted so hard and avoided the truth. I think for the most part I’ve been living a lie – a mix of twisted perception of Self and allowing a kind of dormancy of Self. Perhaps this is for another blog, article, or short story! I say that because although I’ve been ‘telling’ myself for years that I am calm and green and turquoise colored in nature, recently I found that there is a greater part of me expressing herself in bright red tones, force and nature! Being an outwardly ‘shy’ person since childhood it still shocks me when this ‘giant red energy’ comes from within me! Maybe not shockingly,  but learning to accept this powerful energy within me!  This red energy shows herself in athletics and in academics! (and when I’m fighting for Mother Earth and Her Children!) So naturally when my baby girl says I have a B in Honors Chemistry and I reply encouragingly, “That’s great! Why not an ‘A’?” I only say and do what I myself would do and have done in my own academics! I push her like I push myself when I’m in school. I push her to be better, in life! Congrats Baby Girl!

#1 Menses Yoga Pose – Savasana ?

I recently saw this video on a search for finding the best and or worst yoga poses to do when on you menses. I dont have cramps, Im not out of sorts, quite the contrary Im high vibration and high optimistic and moving forward with big energy. I can admit my periods had become a night mare once I hit my mid 40s! Prior the winter of 2012, I had the over 30 years of serene almost non existent periods – sans cramps, or discomfort, sans wild mood swings, or symptoms, in fact, being vegetarian seemed to help me through those years. There were times when my period was almost non existent or lasted for 2-4 days tops! I used to brag on it. But then as I hit 40-ish and through diet changes I guess my periods were less kind. The last few years especially I suffered quietly. Now, they are much lighter. Not to my almost non existent state of yesteryear but showing a much healthier improvement. I have no cramps, very little almost-non-existent bloating,  and my emotions are steady, balanced and clear.

I usually have to shut down for a week while on my menses but so far my energy is fine, and I’m honestly ready for sprinting, planks, sessions et al.

During yoga I mastered a crow pose with little effort. Then  I found that the most important pose for women on our menses to do is Savasana (the Restorative Pose) to take Sacred Time for ourselves as needed. To be intuitive, to be still and restful. “Deeply connecting to our Souls and Intuition”  Sara Avant Stover, yogini and best-selling author of The Way of the Happy Woman.

She further asks:

  • What are the Dominant Emotions that I’m feeling during my cycle this month?
  • What issues are coming to light through situations in my life?
  • Through my relationships, through my emotions, that need my attention?
  • What feels really hard right now, feels really challenging?
  • And what Am I needing to know and to learn from those challenges?
  • How am I being called to heal and transform ?

Day 9 ♥ – Crow Pose – From My Yoga Pages

So yesterday I did the  Crow Pose in my Yoga practice! You can imagine how stoked I am right now!!
I had only planned on ‘stretching’ out better to make up for missing my Warm ups, cool downs and stretches the day before my HIIT morning practice! Since I was sore, I really just went into the practice completely open-minded and found myself pushing, stretching and breathing into the yoga teacher’s poses and my own simply because my body seemed to want to go in that direction (i followed what my body wanted). Bending and breathing into poses with a kind of thankfulness and lightness.  This is little huge personal milestone for me. I’ve done a crow pose before but not with such ease and feeling of body control to be honest before it felt more of –(pause) — doing a physical exercise. This felt so different!!!

10690271_10205323009053014_5463141337779671149_nThis time mastering the  Crow Pose felt cohesive! It is as if my physical body AND strength are coming together in unison. I know that may not seem to make sense – or perhaps it makes perfect sense. But I feel more in tune with my Body when I exercise whether I’m doing sprints, planks, hill drills, and yoga! There is a different feeling I’ve never felt before this ‘all encompassing experience’ I have surrendered to lol. In my early days of yoga, I had this feeling of ‘oneness’ with my Body, Mind Soul and Spirit. But I lacked the Strength that my body could have had,  although I was very flexible and ultra spiritual!!!  There was still something missing in my ecstatic state of love and being!

Today is not merely physical or spiritual, there is a kind of “Call and Response” my Body is doing that I have never felt privy too. Beyond the  duality of my past understandings. It’s beyond the mindset of grabbing some protein, shakes or meals, hitting the gym with the guys, sweating and hurting like crazy, bulking and prizing my new muscles, then heading to another meal, etc. I didn’t know what I was missing until it was gone and I had to create another way.

If you would have told me a year ago or even 6 months ago that Squats and Push ups with Planks would change me dramatically I would have thought no its the gym and pumping Iron that can do that – ONLY! But then I’m not after The Arnold Look, I don’t want to be Swole. I’m not eating what  Arnold ate to get those muscular results and gains either. Being Vegan and Vegetarian has its rewards.

Rise, Crow Pose -Instructor-Subha in Jamaica, WI

I’m after ‘feeling AND being the MOST Fit I’ve ever been in my Life! Not to simply look aesthetically pretty to the eye,  but actually be stronger in my ability to do things (simple exercises and poses I could not do before) those that are REAL AND FUNCTIONAL as I define them:

  • Can I Sprint? And How fast?
  • Am I Flexible and Agile?
  • Am I Strong AND Confident? Can I lift my Body weight and beyond?
  • Can I do the splits, pull ups, push ups, headstand with ease?
  • Do I feel and look sexy to me (and others)?
  • Am I happy and living the Best of What (Who) I am?
  • Am I aligned with Earth and Purpose?
  • Am I psychic, radiant with higher energy, in tune with my vibration and in synchronicity?
  • Am I in the ‘Right’ Direction? And using the Tools available to me to keep me at Balance in this journey?

Yoga for Beginners! Inspired by Janelle Monae’s “Yoga” & the Era of Madam CJ Walker

MADAMCJWALKER_THEFIRSTI am doing my best to introduce my daughter to the wonderful healing gifts of yoga! It’s a sacred movement that becomes a spiritual practice and heals the body, mind and spirit in the process.  She showed me Janelle Monae’s Yoga video last night and I could only chuckle. It was only two weeks ago I was showing her Villa Lewaro, the shack to mansion hair-care business legacy of  Madam CJ Walker (b.December 23, 1867) aka Sarah Breedlove from the cottonfields and washrooms aka The First Female American Millionaire”; the Mother of “I got my start by giving myself a start!”  All during the most terrorized decades of Jim Crow she and others like her prospered to achieve and give back to their community, providing employment, education, homes, beauty, culture and way to make it out of slavery consciousness.

Kudos, fist pumps, Ase’s and more Love to Ms. Janelle Monae! Artists like these are needed for the consciousness of our children, to help shape their lies and perceptions of Self and their World. Let the rebirth begin…

the Yin and Yang of Being, BodyBuilding and Practicing Yoga

Selfie 2013

Actions Speak Louder than Words, Selfie, BodyBuilding 2013

The Yin and Yang of Being, BodyBuilding and Practicing Yoga? Uhhhh, can you, should you?

For me it’s no longer an ‘either or’ debate. Often we feel as if we are forced to choose between parts of ourselves and told we cant do one over  the other, some of us  are stuck with a role that others have chosen for us  based on our past or dominant characteristics and behaviors, but is that who we truly are? —————————–

The idea was to reduce my risk of injury and joint problems by having functionally mobile joints. For me, the restricting factor was my muscles being shortened from the constant repetitive short range of motion and single-plane of motion lifts typical in bodybuilding training (bench press, shoulder press, squats, deadlifts, etc.).

As a result of this explorative journey into trying yoga, my body opened up and I reduced a lot of the stiffness I felt in my joints from the repetitive motions common in bodybuilding. Yoga was not only great for stretching and restoring my range of motion, but it was also great for stress relief and mental relaxation.  From Enhancing Bodybuilding with Yoga

—————————– Aren’t we in constant change and flux? The truth is we are, Energy. Energy is in constant movement. At this very moment whether you are sitting or sleeping the Earth herself is orbiting our vast space and at the equator 25,000 miles pass by in 24 hours, at a speed of 25000/24 or just over 1000 miles per hour. Thus, we are all moving whether we perceive it or fail to acknowledge this truth,  ‘energy in motion’.

We are taught that this world is full of opposites and we learn in school to see the opposites and compare differences. I learned through the medium of Yoga which coincidentally means “to Yoke, union, bring together” that life’s opposites are more like complimentary parts of the whole.  Together these polarities bring greater meaning to the sum of its parts. Its like having variables of an equation that fit or contrast enough to create rebirth. All of which, seemingly different in obvious definitions and expression come from the same spectrum of light and life. Man is brilliant at seeing differences but slow at seeing the beautify of polarity as necessary compliments I first was introduced to Meditation from Nature at age 10. I would often play outside as refuge from an abusive home environment. It was  Nature that I first learned to listen, to quiet Self, to breathe with the wind and thus become apart of creation itself. My reason for learning to meditate? You wouldnt believe me if I told you, but I will share. My ten year old mind said, “these people are going to kill me, with their junk food, sad(standard american) diet, and toxic emotional behaviors, I better do something now” I had been a sickly kid with all kinds of allergies and skin eczema, and practically threw up everyday, by this time I had heart palpitations I hadnt even told my parents about. And Yes, I was only ten years old. But something moved me outdoors into Nature and into the Meditation of Myself. It was from deep within in meditation that i discovered the beauty of this world, of people, of our Universe. I was a tiny black girl buddha in suburbia awakening in consciousness way beyond my pre adolescent and adult years.

While Meditation brought mental clarity, inner peace and the connection, it was Asana that allowed me to ‘kinnect’ body with the etherical principles of this Mind,Body, Soul  science.  I first learned or rather took my first yoga class in Kundalini and Vinyasa yoga at my kids’ arts charter school in 2003 in Washington, DC.  My teacher, the late Dr. Swami Prem De Ben was taught directly from Swami Vishnudevananda of  Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres. I learned to heat up the body, Kriya cleanses, Bandha exercises, cool the body, and all types of asansa (yoga postures). I was meeting and a part of a community of Yoga instructors, philosophers, studio owners and students. I had discovered others of like mind and body and found soul connections with others in my community life. By 2007, I was  gliding into a lotus position and meditating full speed and by 2011 had my 1st certification in Yoga Teacher Training. I could just as in 2003, bring joy and happiness and unconditional love from the Universe into my heart, into my yoga postures, and walk away from class in an auric smile that permeated and was noticed from others who would yell, “what just happened to you? i want some of that?” “Yoga” I would smile back on my natural high. I wasnt only centered but channeled the feel good vibe into my daily life and onto those around me. Yoga was survival tool. Today, I have incorporated Iron into the mix of expression and discovering myself in a greater, more inclusive way. I am no longer JUST spiritual or JUST love, as I once was expected or described by others, as I was  just practicing yoga. Today I am stronger, more confident, and  more fearless moving outside of my comfort zone. I ventured onto the road of difficulty and intimidation that  I feel comes with exploring and learning weight lifting, HIIT, Crossfit and other Spartan clad athletics and I love it! (I am afterall a Sagittarius)  I was able (am able) to meet myself in the face of polarities that dwell within the sun and moonlit shadows. And Love All of Who I AM. Give yoga a try, you deserve it!
