lavender essential oil – diy mosquito repellent

So I was playing in the woods yesterday! Getting some rest, meditation, and rejuvenation when something didn’t quite feel ‘right.’ I rushed out of the woods only to look on my arm and brush away a mosquito that was fully engaged in my skin. To my surprise I had in a very short time over 6 bites. Just a few days prior, I laughed at my son for escaping getting bitten while he had fallen prey to mosquitos in Washington, DC during dinner.  I had run out of lavender oil the week before and was too lazy to get fresh bottles.  I’m a natural advocate knowing that everything in nature is here for humanity to heal and prosper. I’m also in the midst of getting certified in Aromatherapy for healing (and its magical properties)!  You can make your own natural bug repellents and keep mosquitos, ticks, fleas, and other pesty creatures at bay.  Here’s why and how:

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender ( Lavandula angustifolia) oil is a carminative, mild sedative, anti-stress, depressant, antibacterial, anti-fungal, antioxidant, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory. Not only does it relieve anxiety, and soothe nerves but it heals wounds, burns, cuts, pimples, eczema, even as a hair tonic for hair growth and to relieve sore muscles.

Lavender keeps the bugs (mosquitos) away acting as a natural, safe bug repellent. It also soothes insect bites acting as insecticidal and antiseptic reducing inflammation and itching. Apply the essential oil in a spritzer or drop some in hand to apply to skin prior to entering nature.  You can apply to skin undiluted.

Natural Repellent Oils

Some natural repellent oils include Citronella, Rosemary, Lemon Balm, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Basil, Catnip, Garlic, Tea Tree, Lemongrass, Cedarwood, Pennyroyal. I’ve chosen to combine some of these oils with Lavender essential oil. For decades, I was a Cedarwood (and Frankincense and Jasmine) wearing gal until I realized that it just wasnt strong enough alone for mosquitos and wearing Lavender oil (for me and my chemistry) really worked better. I saw and felt better results! Here are a few DIY (Do It Yourself) recipes.

Essential Oil Spritzer Spray

Supplies: 2 oz  spray bottle, a carrier oil (avocado/almond/rosehip seed/olive oil/evening primrose oil), 10-20 drops of Essential Oils, distilled water, organic witch hazel

EOs (Essential Oils)

8 drops Geranium

5 drops Rosemary

5 drops Lavender

Add 1/2 tbspn (table spoon) distilled water, 1 tsp (teaspoon) carrier oil, 1 tsp witch hazel, 15-20 drops essential oils (blend). Shake well.

Seeking Fitness in Nature – Fitness Vlog June 2018

How about Fitness in Nature?

Going for a lake swim preceded by yoga in the park? Sounds amazing right, that’s what I thought. I got dressed headed to Fredericksburg VA to a park I had visited last Indian Summer where everyone was either tubing, swimming or fishing in the Rappahannock River. I was excited with yoga mat packed and Speedo-goggles ready! When I got there however I was met with a half closed park gate, complete empty park, and what looked like an overflowing muddy river. I was heart broken and frustrated that perhaps I was in the wrong state or country. Then I thought about Sweden.

So Glam

When you are in Sweden you have the right to walk, cycle, ride, ski and camp on any land with the exception of private gardens, near a dwelling house or land under cultivation. We call it the Freedom to Roam.

I recently completed an International Business course and was blown away at my findings. First let me share, I’m a kind of bohemian indigenous artistic geek, I’m a Sagittarius who loves just about everything I can sink my teeth into physically and mentally,  i love research and learning. It doesn’t feel right if I cant research something, try it, then report about it.

I’d love to be able to go to a local park with speedo and googles and jump into a lake but living in America the thought of lake swimming in my location is damn near impossible for many reasons.

06-26-18_ClosedPark_Sign_OldMillsVA-NSGCopyrightWell one of my classmates was focusing their project on Sweden so me being me I responded with ‘some’ knowledge of not only business economic statistics and a few political views but dove into what makes Sweden, Sweden. What I found astounded me! For short, I’ve been a Nature lover since I was a child running through the forests learning all I could about berries and flowers to ingest and absorbing the beauty and serenity of trees and cloud watching. I developed a love with Nature and all her healing gems.  I’d love to be able to go to a local park with speedo and googles and jump into a lake but living in America the thought of lake swimming in my location is damn near impossible for many reasons. Uh, not the case in Sweden!

Not only do Swedes have a “Right to Roam” with passports that open doors to them across countries and freely visit other nations without scrutiny, they have what is called “Right to Public Access” or ‘Allemansrätt’ (Outdoor Access Rights) which is a right to national parks and nature that would otherwise be forbidden or heavily limited. That’s right, Swedes can swim in public lakes, park lakes and rivers, roam mountains, and coastlines,  andarchipelagos! Learn more about Swedish EPA Right to Roam policies.

06-26-18_FoundFeathersPath_OldMillsVA-IMG_5540

What a huge contrast to the policies and laws here in the United States, especially where I currently reside in Northern Virginia, but then I’m thinking I probably just need to travel. See what other American’s are doing, roam the parks, country sides, coastal regions, get a passport and hop across the country into jungles, hike foreign trails, seek refuge in sacred temples. Okay, Im dreaming and intending! (smile) Here’s to your adventures, fitness and fun!

Stay Fit, stay Love, stay Empowered!

Ah Spring 2018 – Green Juice and Salad

I’ve been looking through my photos and cataloging them from my phone. There’s quite a “few” food images (over a hundred), gemstone pics (over a hundred) of new jewelry, nature pics I captured and yet haven’t posted. I’ve been wrapped up in doing that I haven’t had the time to share! Even right now, I’m heading out the door to get in some Yoga in the park and river swim! Yesterday at the gym I was reveling in how easy my burpees are compared to a year (years) ago! At this very moment, I feel guilt of not being ‘on time’ by writing this (smile) I just want to get ‘there’ and experience the water, the sun, take in the breath and energy of wherever I choose to be in the moment. I choose to be present!

So how does this translate into social media? There are two very different contrasting sides to me, one demands complete privacy and autonomy, while the other side wants to snapshot, click and capture every moment of life, the key is balance. Which I am most definitely seeking and embodying.  I’ve heard and seen serious YouTuber Influencers speak on this subject and express how they are torn between the world of Social Media and their personal lives. There followers are in the high thousands and millions so I cant even imagine the pressure they must feel and yet I can relate on a much smaller scale.

Just a reminder_

In fact, I just finished (wrapping up) my International Business course which I got an A! My next class  is Social Media and this very subject will be discussed and explored (at least by me)! Nevertheless, we must press on and I want to express extreme gratitude, love, and thankfulness.

Have a Beautiful, Bountiful, Beast Summer!

Aromatherapy + Essential Oil Healing: Myrrh

Aromatherapy and Essential Oils Complimentary Medicines

Aromatherapy and essential oils have numerous potent healing benefits documented in the ancient healing texts of the Ebers Papyrus from the medicinal healing priests of Imhotep (Father of Medicine, Khemet, Egypt) and Bast, goddess of Perfume (aromatherapy). Also throughout Greece, China, ancient India, and the Middle East. Today these healing modalities are packed with healing the senses (smell) and (touch) skin, the largest organ of the body, the integumentary organ. Essential Oils are concentrated hydrophobic liquid containing volatile aroma compounds from plants (Wikipedia). Whereas, Aromatherapy uses aromatic volatile oils like essential oils to vaporize a room or environment to engage the senses (smell) to induce healing effects on the body, mind, and spirit.

Origins

This ancient Near East African resin from the Commiphora myrrha or (Commiphora molmol) thorny-bush tree has been used as aromatherapy, incense, perfume, essential oil and healing medicine since Antiquity. Myrrh is found throughout Africa, the Indian Ocean Islands (Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Somalia, Soma, et. al), Vietnam, India, and Arabia.

Wine and Waistbeads

Did you know Myrrh can be mixed with wine? This resin from the wound of the tree “bleeds” sap in the form of a gum. Myrrh gum is sold as incense in hues of amber, deep orange, musky topaz browns, and are worn in West Africa (Mali) by women as waistbeads.

Uses and Legend

The essential oil of myrrh is extracted from the resin. Both the crystal resin and essential oil can be burned to purify and is a smell of mysterious enlightenment drawing out negative spirits and cleansing auras much like sage in Native American saging ceremonies.  Legend says Myrrh is sacred to the goddess Ast (Isis) deriving from the dark mysteries of the Moon and mastery of the  Underworld.  Myrrh is used to purify, consecrate, and bless as a guardian against lower-level negative entities (energy). It helps to uplift, clear, redirect, enhance, anoint, break black magick, and bring peace and clarity of the body, mind, and spirit.

Words of Power – Adding mantras to your physical routine

namaste_mantras_evgblog

Adding mantras to your physical routine

Mind over matter, thoughts create things, if you think you can or you cant you’re right, all these philosophical phrases are true. They can make the difference between winning or failure, attaining your goal or watching it drift up with the wind of your dreams. Truth is you create your reality, everything you have or don’t have is a result of your deepest perception and belief in your self.  What you say to your self (the internal dialogue) shapes your existence, what you attract, and your progress.

Adding mantras to your physical practice are key to helping you shape the life you desire and body you envision. They can help keep you focused, on track, and committed to your vision (goals, targets, and dreams).

mantras_naturalselfgoddess

Mantras in History

Mantras have long been used to reshape reality and create change. Known as “sacred sound or utterances” these syllable word groups are believed to bring forth spiritual and mental powers. Some of the oldest mantras were used by yogis and priests in the holy temples of ancient India (Indus Kush) predating Aryan invasion, however, the oldest known mantras are in Vedic Sanskrit.  Today these mantras aid meditation, increase abundance, and empower change to create the life you desire.

Healing Benefits of Mantras

Mantras can induce altered states of consciousness, trance, and reprogram the subconscious mind. The use of  “power words” in your spiritual practice and meditations empowers your heart and chakra centers, aligns and attunes higher frequencies to your sense of self, grounds and uplifts your spirit, and sets forth positive affirmations of change and dynamic transformation on a soul-level in the universe. Your words are vibrations that create change and take form into solid matter, experience, and outcomes.

Power words are like seeds that take root and form abundant trees full of healing fruit, seeds, nuts, berries, flowers, and medicinal bark. Your words can flourish, create, destroy, preserve, and activate. Mantras are perfect creative tools to mindfully place intention as a vehicle for your transformation.

No New Year Resolutions! Just Re+Affirmations & Intentions

New Year’s Resolutions hardly ever stick throughout the year! Personally, I think they’re a bad idea because in a sane world who plants seeds in the frigid dead of winter and expects to bear fruit? Wouldn’t it make more sense to plant seeds as nature naturally intended, in the spring cycle where Mother Nature nurtures and nourishes all with warmth, care, and the blossoming of new fruit?  In fact, according to Daniel Wallen of Life Hack Org “10 Reasons Why New Year’s Resolutions Fail” resolutions fail because “we don’t believe in ourselves, we think too much instead of doing, and we treat a marathon like a sprint!”  and that’s just a few! Why not instead, simply “reaffirm and send intentions” out into the Universe that you either started last fall, summer, or birthday to keep the momentum, motivation, and reignite?

Reaffirm
Perhaps you’ve fallen off the bandwagon, or allowed distractions to get in the way of hitting your mark. Well, its never too late! Pick up and dust off those intentions and send them out from the gut of your solar plexus or from your heart chakra with stronger vibrations and knowing that you ‘will’ nurture, create, and will them into fruition. Take a deep smiling breath and see with your minds eye and big open heart that you already have what you desire! Smile in the areas of your creative mind that you are experiencing, doing and living this affirmed existence, scenario, and life choice. Remember “YOU” are the navigator, the commander, the creator of your own holographic world and magnetize and repel at will (thought).

For instance, a few weeks ago I reaffirmed eating healthy! Instead of buying shiny new things like clothes and designer bags, I invested in health ‘supplies’ lol like essential oils, organic beauty products, organic tart cherry, chlorophyll, fresh greens, seeds, and veggies,  a Himalayan salt lamp, and more! I dug up and shared Meditation playlists with family. Purchased candles and aromatherapy oils, beautiful altar and decor motifs to use as spiritual reminders, fresh flowers and vases, all while feeling and speaking my intentions.

Create & DO!
For New Years day, I simply booked a hot Bikram yoga class with like-minded members of my community and followed through with my 50/50 rule (as I push to 80/20)! Today, I will make a Hematite bracelet to continue to ignite my existing intentions, prayers and affirmations.  Hematite (iron oxide mineral (Fe2O3)) has a soothing (albeit small) magnetic effect and upon a full moon can ‘magnetize’ your intentions, heart and word (affirmation)! Real hematite, however, is not a magnet as some sold as real hematite however, metaphysically, this gemstone can be used symbolically with the intention of brining your intention down to earth (grounding). Since we are currently brining in this ‘new’ year under a Cancer Super Full Moon it’s a great alignment to ‘center’ and revisit the inner home the zodiac sign of Cancer reflects. Soft gemstones for the Cancer zodiac are pearl, moonstone, emerald, and ruby to focus on receptivity, nurturing qualities, watery wisdom, and magnification of desires. Choose gemstones that align with your highest intentions and spirit remember “there is spoon”! So be magical, wild, and empowered in using your intuition and ‘know’ you are making the best choices for to support your mission of greatness!

Happy 2018 New Year, Love & Empowerment!

crazy cumin, dance, fitness & organic foods: summer in dc

I’m so thankful to be back in the DC area! It’s been both humbling and eye-opening journey home and so far I’ve been gifted with some awesome creative avenues such as Dance Workstudy program (study West African Dance, Modern Dance, Hip Hop, Salsa styles), Join a Neo Soul Jazz band as Lead Vocals, perform in a Women’s program featuring international dance, learn acoustic guitar (one was given to me!), and create natural (vegan) food recipes for friends (featured below). Dance has been amazing and challenging because I’m learning to breathe through the movements I intend to perfect (each hand gesture, feet placement, neck roll, hip thrust is deliberate and intentional with focus on the memory of Ancestors and space-time continuum of what is now through the past and even our future)! In one class, we started out with one drummer then ended up with over 7 Drummers and the company director showing up to watch class!!! Everything in my life has become primarily spiritual and humbling!

Returning to school at this time – has been perfect timing. I’ve managed to keep most of my As and stay at a decent GPA while adding Creative Writing and International Business to my minors. And I love starting Poetry Workshop this term, as it allows me to dive deeply into the very intimate aspects of my Self and explore greater depths of creativity and the craft of poetry.

Rainbow Kale Salad with Crazy Cumin Chickpeas and Creole Sweet Tomato Salad

Rainbow Kale Salad with Crazy-Cumin Chickpeas and Creole Sweet Tomato Salad (pictured above) a great organic Summer meal, snack and in my case breakfast! Shout out to MOM’s Organic Market in Waldorf, Maryland (3301 Plaza Way, Waldorf, MD 20603) for their exquisite organic selections and great customer service. Everyone who worked there had that beautiful #MelaninMagick glow! I’m a nut for fresh organic foods and love, love, love diverse recipes I can sample and ‘recreate’ into my own unique creation; to me “EVERYTHING IS ART!” and food is no exception. The more diverse the colors the better, not only does the presentation look amazing, but you’re getting all the nutrients your body is seeking! So what did I make? First-course Vegan Wraps (not pictured). I found the most beautiful selection of Swiss Chard I used along with Collard Green leaves.  These were stuffed with mashed avocado and chickpeas, sliced avocados, sliced red and yellow bell peppers (so sweet), spicy arugula mixed sprouts, sliced carrots, organic tomatoes, sweet red onion… The organic cumin was such a treat! I couldn’t get enough of it. That morning, I made a dressing with organic Olive Oil, Braggs Aminos, Cumin powder, squeezed Lime juice, salt, and pepper! Chopped the Dinosaur Kale thinly along with the chopped Swiss Chard leaves, let it soak with the red and yellow peppers, threw in the sliced tomato and red onion and mashed chickpeas and Voila! the yummiest salad breakfast ever! As for my “Crazy Cumin” obsession? Not so crazy after all, cumin is known for its healing properties including its dietary fiber content! It’s a carminative (calms the body), antifungal, antimicrobial, and stimulates digestion. Since my friend had been juicing most of his foods I thought it would help him ease into eating raw foods. I remember the Rasta in Harlem teaching me all about the healing benefits of cumin seeds adding to cooked or oiled foods. And I secretly love the flavor it adds to cilantro, avocado, and lime! ~ Delicious!

The Beauty & Magic of Anthocyanins

I’m obsessed with all things containing Anthocyanins, why? Because they are Nature’s powerfully packed nutrient rich chemicals that help to active, stimulate and empower melanin compounds. They have a higher pH the darker their pigments (although recorded as red-purple at pH 7 while green at pH 8-14). Ever hear the phrase “the darker the berry the sweeter the juice?” well it’s a lot more to that phrase when it comes to our sunkissed magical composition.  The Reds, Purples, and Blues of the darker leafy greens, black rice, eggplant, dark red cherries, red apples, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, red cabbage and black grapes. These nutrient-rich dark pigmented fruits and vegetables contain flavonoids and a variety of healing properties.  Preventing cancer, diabetes, neurological, liver, vision, cardiovascular disorders and more. They are anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and pro-oxidants.  One of the scientific goodies I found was that these molecular compounds “convert light energy into electrical energy!” Oh yes, anthocyanins! I love you! ❤

Checking Your Self Esteem – Inner Wellness Glow

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Sometimes you’ve gotta check your self-esteem, give yourself a self-esteem check up. Find out whether you are living on purpose or just going with any given situation that may not honor you. Living on purpose doesn’t mean you are living your dream life and all the world is rainbows, but it does mean you have figured out what you want in your life and having the courage to task out ways to obtain your dream.

Healthy self-esteem means you are not afraid to place your goals in the center of your life. Build your plan and start achieving the small tasks necessary to build upon larger goals, desires, and dreams. You can create an “Inner Wellness Glow” by building self-esteem, stronger values, acceptance of self and others, and being grounded in who and what you are becoming. Healthy self-esteem allows you to radically accept yourself – flaws and all – and create a life you envision as your own.

Check your self-esteem? Do you give into other people’s demands of your time and energy? Or do you make clear boundaries for others to respect your time, energy or resources?

Do you think highly of yourself or your abilities to accomplish a goal, job, creative OnlyOneYouidea?  Or does self-doubt, or negative voices creep in and sabotage your ideas before they take flight?

Do you value yourself? Do you like aspects or parts of yourself or character? Have you given yourself permission to be authentic? Do you value other people’s ideas or opinions over yours? Are you easily swayed or bend to other people’s will or personality? Or do you stand firmly in your own space or ideas and values?

If you’re unsure where your self-esteem lies take a quick check or quiz, get out a pencil and paper and free write your thoughts and deepest truths, meditate or pray on your inquiries, and be patient and observant that your inquiries are being answered. If your self-esteem is damaged begin to rebuild your self-trust, allow intuition and gut feelings to exist in your decision-making process as a priority rather than seeking or accepting outside help, opinion or answers in place of your own.  Accept yourself radically, fully with love, respect and honor your personal values and ideas. Remember there is only one “you!”
